IBT Gains ANAB Accreditation to Conduct ASTM C518 Testing

Ontario, Calif. (Nov. 16, 2018) — The IAPMO Institute of Building Technology (IBT) is now accredited by ANAB to conduct the ASTM C518 thermal transmission properties test, an exciting new addition to the expanding list of accredited tests it can offer to building materials manufacturers.

ASTM C518, Standard Test Method for Steady-State Thermal Transmission Properties by Means of the Heat Flow Meter Apparatus, tests such insulating materials as expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS), extruded polystyrene insulation (XPS), spray-applied polyurethane foam insulation, polyisocyanurate insulation, fiberglass and rockwool batts, and blankets.

The ability of a material to resist the conductive flow of heat is expressed in units of oF.ft2.h/Btu {m2.K/W} but is more commonly known as its R-value. The greater the R-value of the material, the greater the heat resistance or insulating effectiveness of the material and thus the better its insulative capacity.

Using its in-house TA Instruments/LaserComp FOX 314 Heat Flow Meter, IBT issues reports on a tested-material’s thermal conductivity (k-value) and thermal resistance (R-value).

“The construction industry is continuously creating energy efficient materials, and the feedback and independent verification we provide is critical to this process,” said Jay Mishra, vice president of Building Product Testing.

IAPMO IBT Obtains Recognition from Florida Building Commission as an Approved Testing Laboratory

Ontario, Calif. (April 25, 2016) The IAPMO Institute of Building Technology (IBT) has obtained approval from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (FL DBPR) as a Product Testing Laboratory.

FL DBPR provides product approval in the following eight (8) categories as described in Rule 61G20-3. This rule covers the approval of products for compliance with the structural requirements of the Florida Building Code:

  1. Panel Walls
  2. Exterior Doors
  3. Roofing Products
  4. Skylights
  5. Windows
  6. Shutters
  7. Structural Components
  8. Impact Protective Systems

Manufacturers can now have their products tested at IAPMO IBT and submit the test report to FL DBPR in order to obtain statewide product approval in Florida.

The Florida Product Approval System was established in 2003 as a means of providing “accountability; a higher standard of practice for product evaluations; and uniformity and consistency of enforcement statewide,” as stated on the FL DBPR website.

Further information on this program may be found at the Florida Building Commission website.
